With the warm weather here, it’s the perfect time to remind everyone how important it is to stay safe when working in hot and sunny conditions – especially at height.
Based on IRATA’s Safety and Health Topic Sheet No. 14, here are key reminders:
- Hydration is crucial – aim for at least 6–8 litres of water a day during physically demanding work in the heat.
- Watch for signs of heat stress, dizziness, or fatigue — take regular breaks.
- Layer your clothing smartly to stay cool or warm as needed.
- Use sun protection – SPF 30+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and protective clothing are a must when working outdoors.
- UV exposure can be dangerous even on cloudy days, so take precautions no matter the forecast.
A heatwave can turn routine work into a serious risk – don’t underestimate the environment. Plan ahead, check the heat index, and put safety first.
