With the possibility of snow and freezing temperatures in London, we’re reminded of the importance of keeping safety front and center while working in these cold and challenging conditions.
Wet and cold environments can pose significant risks, especially for those working at height, where proper planning and precautions are critical.
Staying warm and dry is key!
Layered clothing, waterproof gear, and windproof jackets are your first line of defense against the cold. Remember, water conducts heat away 25 times faster than air, so keeping dry is essential to avoid hypothermia. Regular breaks to warm up and constant monitoring of weather conditions are equally important.
IRATA’s Safety and Health Topic Sheet No. 14: Protection Against Environmental Conditions provides comprehensive guidelines for staying safe in extreme conditions, including cold weather. It’s a must-read for anyone in the rope access industry. Stay safe, stay warm, and always plan ahead!
