Why rope access is the right method for masonry cleaning

Masonry cleaning is rarely uniform. Soiling concentrates around cornices, parapets, window heads and behind rainwater pipes — exactly the spots that conventional access struggles to reach.

Rope access lets our technicians work directly on each detail, treating ornament, mortar joints and plain faces with the appropriate pressure, chemistry and dwell time.

We rig in a day, clean the elevation as a single coherent piece of work and demobilise without leaving a scaffold print on the pavement.

Matching the method to the substrate

The wrong cleaning method can do more damage than the dirt itself. RAIL’s masonry teams choose the right system for each surface:

1. Doff steam cleaning: low-pressure, high-temperature steam for soft, sensitive or listed stone and brick. Kills biological growth at the root without saturating the wall.
2. TORC and Jos systems: gentle swirl-vortex cleaning for ornamental stone, terracotta and fragile brick.
3. High-pressure cleaning: robust pressure washing for hard, modern brick and engineering brick where the substrate can take it.
4. Chemical poultices: drawing out deep staining, efflorescence and graffiti from porous stone without abrading the surface.
5. Biocide treatment: slowing the return of algae, lichen and moss after the initial clean.
